A Teaching Simile

Being a teacher is like being a member of the 49er Faithful. It’s not holding a ticket, or a credential, that defines you. It’s showing up prepared; wearing your jerseys, carrying your seat cushions, and memorizing the line-up; or, wearing your comfy shoes, packing those lesson plans, and memorizing the line-up.

You rise at kick-off, optimistic about the game (or year) ahead. When your team is on offense you’re quiet and watch them run with it, just as you watch your students take an idea and fly. When your team, or students, drop the ball and go on defense, you get loud and let them know you’re there.

You look forward to touchdowns, but you know field goals can win the game. Win or lose, you’ll be back next week, ready to do it all again.
